The city of Rolling Hills Estates incorporated in 1957. This is the main equestrian area, most homes built with barns and horse facilities. There are 10 miles of bicycle paths and 25 miles of public horse trails with tunnels under Hawthorne and Crenshaw Blvd. The city has 178 acres of city parks 371 acres of open spaces. The commercial Chandler Sand and Gravel Facility is being filled in and may be a future site for the Rolling Hills County Club. A 91 acre Quarry is being filled and may be developed. Nansen Field is an 8.6 acre park owned by the Seamen of Norway Inc. and was purchased for sailors from Norway for athletic activities like soccer while in local ports.
